Speaker: Larry Kalbers, Ph.D., CPA
Topic: Who Do You Trust? The Importance of Ethics, Values, and Trust
Kalbers will review ethical foundations and briefly discuss the ACFE Code of Ethics and Professional Standards. He will present an applied ethical decision model that can be used to approach any ethical dilemma. Through a discussion of values and stakeholders, he will provide examples of conflicts that arise between different values and how they are applied to different stakeholders. Kalbers will also introduce the importance of culture and trust within the context of society, professions and occupations, organizations, and interpersonal relationships. Finally, Kalbers will address some of the reasons it is so difficult to be ethical. Recent examples of events and research will be used throughout the presentation.
Lawrence P. Kalbers, Ph.D., CPA, is a Professor of Accounting and holds the R. Chad Dreier Chair in Accounting Ethics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He currently serves as associate dean in the College of Business Administration. He earned a B.A from Wittenberg University, an M.S. from Kent State University, and a Ph.D. from Penn State University. His teaching interests are in the areas of accounting and business ethics, auditing, and financial reporting. Kalbers manages the Dreier Chair in Accounting Ethics Distinguished Speaker Series, which brings prominent executives and business leaders to campus each semester. His research interests include audit committees and corporate governance, professionalism, auditor burnout, auditor organizational commitment, and professional ethics. In addition to published research, Kalbers often presents at academic and professional conferences. He gained auditing and accounting experience working for J.K. Lasser & Co., Ernst & Ernst, Kalbers and Sturges, Inc., Ernst & Young, and as a sole practitioner. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and CalCPA.Register Now
